The Moon was the first celestial landing pad on which humanity stood, and by UN charter may not be exploited (although it’s only illegal if you get caught!). However, it may serve as an important rest stop for journeys farther away from Earth. Additionally, constructing and launching things from Luna can be cheaper due to the lower gravity.
